About DAWN

Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) promotes democracy and human rights in the MENA region by advocating for changes in U.S. foreign policy, pursuing accountability for regional abusers and their enablers, and amplifying the voices of political exiles and civil society activists from MENA countries. We deliberately focus on the MENA governments with the closest ties to the U.S. government because, as a U.S.-based nonprofit, that is where we believe we have the greatest moral responsibility and where we stand to have the greatest impact.

DAWN was founded in June 2018 by late Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist, Jamal Khashoggi. Tragically, just a few months after he launched DAWN, Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul by a 15-man hit squad dispatched by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). In April 2020 DAWN's remaining board members revived the organization and hired Executive Director Sarah Leah Whitson. Since then, DAWN has grown into a dynamic group of over a dozen staff dedicated to making our shared vision of a free and peaceful MENA region governed by democratic, rights-respecting governments a reality.
