DAWN is seeking a qualified applicant for a part-time (20 hours/week) Advocacy Associate position to support our policy, advocacy, and research efforts related to human rights and democracy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The position will be based in Washington, DC, or virtually.
Responsibilities: Advocacy (10 hours/week):
Assist in DAWN's advocacy with the U.S. Congress, State Department, and National Security Council on issues related to human rights and democracy in the MENA region
Familiarity with key U.S. laws and policies related to arms transfers and security assistance, including the Foreign Assistance Act (FAA), Arms Export Control Act (AECA), and Leahy laws
Knowledge of U.S. targeted sanctions programs against human rights abusers in the MENA region
Help draft policy papers, letters, talking points, and other advocacy materials
Communications (5 hours/week):
Assist with drafting and posting social media content related to DAWN's work in the MENA region
Help draft and distribute press releases and monitor media coverage of DAWN's advocacy efforts
Support the production of online advocacy content such as issue briefs and fact sheets
Research (5 hours/week):
Conduct research on human rights issues and developments in the MENA region
Research in Arabic, Hebrew, or another relevant regional languages
Assist DAWN's research team in documenting human rights abuses and violations of international law
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (international relations, Middle East studies, human rights, etc.)
Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience
Proficiency in Arabic, Hebrew, or another relevant regional language is required
Familiarity with the U.S. foreign policy-making process and key institutions
Excellent research, writing, communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced advocacy environment
Passionate commitment to advancing human rights and democracy
Compensation:
Hourly pay of $25-$35 depends on experience and qualifications
