About this project

In early April 2023, DAWN and the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) co-hosted a virtual webinar examining how autocratic governments in the Middle East have aided China's repression of its Muslim communities, especially ethnic Uyghurs from Xinjiang province. Across the Middle East, governments, religious scholars and religious establishments have emerged as key partners in the Chinese government's efforts to "Sinicize" Islam within China. The event brought together activists and experts to address this emerging area of transnational repression and discuss how the international community can respond. Featured papers from the webinar have now been published in DAWN's journal, Democracy in Exile. A video of the event is available here.

"By emphasizing narrow technical questions of compliance with international humanitarian law instead of broader policy and political considerations, human rights organizations risk perpetuating an unquestioned acceptance of armed conflict and overly militarized foreign policies."

- Sarah Leah Whitson, Executive Director of DAWN
