Where Is the Outrage, and Action, in the Arab World Over China's Uyghur Genocide?
China has succeeded in recruiting non-democratic governments to deny that it is carrying out a genocide against Muslim minorities.
In early April 2023, DAWN and the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) co-hosted a virtual webinar examining how autocratic governments in the Middle East have aided China's repression of its Muslim communities, especially ethnic Uyghurs from Xinjiang province. Across the Middle East, governments, religious scholars and religious establishments have emerged as key partners in the Chinese government's efforts to "Sinicize" Islam within China. The event brought together activists and experts to address this emerging area of transnational repression and discuss how the international community can respond. Featured papers from the webinar have now been published in DAWN's journal, Democracy in Exile. A video of the event is available here.
