Following the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion today ruling that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal, DAWN issues the following statement:
"The United States continues to shield Israel from facing any consequences for its policies of apartheid and permanent occupation, the illegality of which are now beyond reproach," said Sarah Leah Whitson, executive director of DAWN. "The ICJ's determination that Israel's occupation is illegal should be a turning point in Washington, where too many of our leaders still refuse to acknowledge that there is an occupation at all."
"Such a clear declaration that Israel's permanent occupation is illegal makes it impossible to deny the undemocratic one-state, apartheid reality in Israel-Palestine, where half the population lives under a quasi-democracy and the other under a military dictatorship," said Michael Schaeffer Omer-Man, director of research for Israel-Palestine at DAWN.
"The international community's obligation to put an end to Israel's illegal policies of apartheid and occupation have never been clearer," said Raed Jarrar, advocacy director at DAWN. "Israel's audacity to commit genocidal acts in Gaza are a direct result of the 57 years of impunity it has enjoyed for its illegal occupation."
