Democracy for the Arab World Now ("DAWN") is seeking highly motivated applicants for the position of Communications Associate. The Communications Associate will be supporting DAWN's mission to promote human rights and democracy in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). The Communications Associate will report to the Communication Director. The Communications Associate may also be assigned administrative tasks in addition to substantive work.

The Communications Associate can work at DAWN's shared workspace in Washington, DC, or remotely from another location.  

Qualifications

  • Commitment to DAWN's mission — the protection of human rights and promotion of democracy in the MENA region.
  • At least 3 years of communications experience. 
  • Strong writing, copy editing, and content management skills required across all media channels.
  • Highly organized in the documentation of the work and logistical and administrative matters related to the communications division.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the use of web, digital, and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SEO/SEM, E-Communications, Video, Google Analytics).
  • Familiarity with holding online events on social media platforms. 
  • Familiarity with Middle East and North Africa (MENA) policy issues.
  • Commitment to working with staff and partners in a positive, collaborative, diverse, and inclusive work environment is required.
  • Familiar with working on the backend of the website for postings and updates.
  • Intermediate knowledge and experience in content marketing and marketing communications skills are welcome. 
  • Basic knowledge of project management and calendaring and ability to work independently and collaboratively on project management.
  • Arabic language skills are welcome.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in managing DAWN's website.
  • Assist in research on media matters and reaching out to contacts in media outlets.
  • Assess the effectiveness of all communication strategies, assert data analysis to drive design and strategy, and collect market feedback and response. 
  • Help manage and grow DAWN's Twitter handle and Facebook, Instagram, and Mailchimp accounts to distribute DAWN's content.
  • Assist in developing quarterly and annual reports.
  • Communications Associate may also be assigned administrative tasks in addition to substantive work.
  • Maintain a timely photo and video archive across all channels and departments.
  • Stay current with market research, communications trends, fresh content, and strategic changes.
  • Professionally interact with senior management and staff at all levels.
  • Such other duties may be assigned.
