In response to the U.S. airstrike today that killed at least 68 African migrants at a detention center in Saada, Yemen, following another U.S. attack earlier this month that killed 74 Yemenis at the Ras Isa oil terminal, DAWN issues the following statement:
"Two massacres in just weeks reveal a horrifying escalation of U.S. violence in Yemen. Trump once bragged about not starting new wars, but this is Trump's war now," said Sarah Leah Whitson, DAWN's executive director. "The Trump administration bears direct responsibility for these war crimes. President Trump has blood on his hands, and he must stop this war now."
"President Trump is waging unauthorized hostilities in Yemen without any declaration of war or approval from Congress and in direct violation of the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution," said Raed Jarrar, DAWN's Advocacy Director. "Congress must act immediately to end this illegal war, and assert its constitutional authority. Lawmakers should immediately introduce a War Powers Resolution of Disapproval to force a vote and bring this unlawful war to an end."
